Do you want to study in the UK for free? The British Government and UK Universities provide a large number of scholarships for international students who want to study in the United Kingdom. To assist, Thetrust Media has compiled a list of the top 15+ UK Scholarships for international students.
Scholarships Provided by the Government:
1.) British Chevening Scholarships (UK)
The value of a scholarship: it covers full tuition fees; a living allowance at a set rate (for one individual); an economy-class return airfare to the UK; and additional grants to cover essential expenditures. This is one of the most sought-after international scholarships in the UK.
Duration of the program: Awards are typically for a one-year Master’s degree.
Since 1983, Chevening has been the UK government’s scholarship program for international students, with the goal of developing global leaders.Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organizations, Chevening offers two types of awards: Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships. The recipients are personally selected by British embassies and High Commissions throughout the world. Chevening Scholarships are awarded to approximately 1,500 individuals every year.
2.) Rhodes Trust Scholarships
Value: The Rhodes international scholarships in the UK cover Oxford University (and college) fees as well as providing an annual stipend. For the 2019–20 academic year, the stipend will be £15,900 per annum (£1,325 per month), from which scholars will pay all living expenses, including accommodation.
Duration: Rhodes Scholars may study for any full-time postgraduate degree (including the BA with senior status over two years) at the University of Oxford.
Established through the will of Cecil John Rhodes in 1902, the Rhodes Scholarships are the oldest and perhaps most prestigious international scholarship program in the world, enabling outstanding young people from around the world to undertake full-time postgraduate study at the University of Oxford. The fellowship of Rhodes Scholars, worldwide and across generations, is active and over 7,000 strong. Each year, 95 Rhodes Scholars are selected from 20 Rhodes constituencies (64 countries) worldwide.
3.) Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships
Value of Scholarships: This international scholarship in the UK provides: airfare from your home country to the UK and returns at the end of your award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor usually the cost of journeys made before your award is finally confirmed), approved tuition and examination fees, a stipend (living allowance), a thesis grant towards the cost of preparing a thesis or dissertation, where applicable, a warm clothing allowance, where applicable, and a study travel grant towards the costs of study-related travel within the UK or overseas.
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) offers around 800 awards for postgraduate study and professional development each year. Over 27,500 Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows have been funded by the UK government through the CSC since 1959. The CSC offers international scholarships in the UK to deserving applicants.
4.) Joint Japan-World Bank Scholarships
Value of Program: The scholarship provides benefits for the recipient only, covering: economy-class air travel between the recipient’s home country and the host university at the start of the study program and one return journey following the end of the overall scholarship period. In addition to the ticket, scholars receive a US $500 travel allowance for each trip, tuition, the cost of basic medical and accident insurance usually obtained through the university, and a monthly subsistence allowance to cover living expenses, including books.
Duration: A maximum duration of two years
The Joint Japan-World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program provides scholarships to students from World Bank member countries to pursue development-related studies at selected universities around the world. The scholarship provides for travel costs between your home country and the host university, tuition for your graduate program, the cost of basic medical insurance, and a monthly subsistence allowance to cover living expenses, including books.

5.) Gates Cambridge Scholarships for Foreign Students
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship program was established in October 2000 with a donation of $210 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge. Fully funded Masters and Ph.D. international scholarships in the UK are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject at the University of Cambridge. To date, more than 1,700 Gates Cambridge Scholarships have been awarded to scholars from more than 100 countries. About 90 new scholarships are awarded each year.
6.) Clarendon Scholarships at the University of Oxford
Value of Award: All Clarendon Scholarships cover tuition and college fees in full and provide a generous grant for living expenses. This is one of the prestigious international scholarships in the UK.
Duration of Program: Clarendon Scholarships are offered for the full period that you are liable to pay tuition fees to the university, which is usually the same as the length of your course.
The Clarendon Scholarship Fund is a prestigious graduate scholarship scheme offering around 140 new scholarships every year to eligible graduate applicants (including international students) at the University of Oxford. 7.) Westminster International Scholarships
Value of Scholarship: Full tuition fee award, accommodation, living expenses, and flights to and from London
Duration of Scholarship: for the duration of the program.
The University of Westminster awards scholarships to eligible students from any developing country who wish to study in the UK and pursue a full-time degree in any field of study at the University of Westminster. The scholarship awards full tuition fee waivers, accommodation, living expenses, and flights to and from London.
8.) University of Bradford Global Development Scholarships
Program Value: Each scholarship is worth approximately £25,000.The scholarship will cover full tuition fees and accommodation in The Green, plus £4,200 per year in living costs to be paid in three installments: October, January, and April.
Duration of program: 1 year

9.) University of Nottingham Masters Scholarships in Developing Solutions
Value of program: 100% tuition fee
Duration of Program: For the one-year master’s program
Founded in 2001, the University of Nottingham is proud to be offering full tuition fee scholarships through the Developing Solutions Scholarship Scheme, founded in 2001. 105 Developing Solutions scholarships are available each year: 30 at 100% tuition and 75 at 50% tuition.
Foundation- or trust-funded scholarships
10.) The Rotary Foundation Scholarships
Value: passports/visas, inoculations, travel expenses, school supplies, tuition, room and board, etc.
Duration: one academy year.
Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects. The Rotary Foundation offers scholarship and fellowship funding through the Rotary Foundation Global Grant scholarships. The scholarship funds graduate-level coursework or research for one to four academic years. The minimum budget for a global grant scholarship is $30,000, which can fund the following: a passport or visa, inoculations, travel expenses, school supplies, tuition, room and board, etc.
11.) Cambridge Trust International Scholarships
Value of Program: Each award will underwrite the full cost of fees and maintenance for the duration of the course.
Duration of Program: This international scholarship in the UK is open to all candidates who will be enrolled in a three-year research program leading to the Ph.D. (including CPGS) that begins the following academic year, and its maximum term is three years. On August 1, 2013, the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and the Cambridge Overseas Trust merged to form the Cambridge Commonwealth, European and International Trust. The Trust supports between 1,100 and 1,400 international students in residence each year from 85 different countries and offers around 500 scholarships yearly. Nearly 19,000 international students have received scholarships from the trust overall. Selected Ph.D., Master’s, and undergraduate students in all fields are eligible for awards.
12) The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) Scholarship
Value of Program: The award will cover the full cost of tuition fees, including any supplementary fees required by your academic institution. The grant will also cover one round-trip flight between your home country and the university, health insurance, a relocation grant to help you cover additional moving costs, and a monthly allowance.
Duration of program: One year
The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) offers a fully-funded scholarship to qualified applicants who wish to study for a Master’s degree in an accredited university around the world. The scholarships are worth up to $50,000, which covers the tuition fees, a monthly allowance to cover living expenses, accommodation, insurance, books, relocation grants, and travel costs. To apply, you must register, fill out an application form, and upload supporting documents online.

13.) MasterCard Foundation Scholarships
Value of Program: Students enrolled in courses at Edinburgh will get full scholarships, covering all expenses, including tuition, living expenses, travel expenses, and housing. Over the next seven years, 80 undergraduate and 120 postgraduate African students will receive fully supported scholarships through the University of Edinburgh’s MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program.
Duration of the program: complete the duration of any program.
60 scholars from other MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program institutions will also benefit from participating in a number of online distance learning Masters programs offered by the University of Edinburgh.
14.) Windle Trust Postgraduate Scholarships
Value of Program: Return airfare to and from the United Kingdom; fully paid or waived overseas student tuition fees; a maintenance (upkeep) stipend for the entire period (12 months) of study
Duration of program: one year in length.
For nearly three decades, Windle Trust International has forged formidable scholarship partnerships with a number of UK universities to provide postgraduate opportunities to young people from African countries. Each year, about 18–20 students come to the UK to study for one-year masters programs. The scholarship covers all tuition, airfare, and living expenses for the entire 12-month program, including leadership training and coaching programs.
15.) Felix Trust Scholarships for Developing Countries
The Felix Scholarship was founded in 1990 to offer gifted, underprivileged students from India and certain other developing countries the opportunity to further their postgraduate education by attending a university in the UK. Felix scholarships are offered at three universities: the University of Oxford, the University of Reading, and the School of Middle eastern and African Studies (SOAS), part of the University of London.
Per academic year, about 20 scholarships are given out. Since the program’s inception, 428 scholarships totaling the entire cost of tuition, living expenses, and round-trip air travel have been given out.
